NDN: South Regional Library on target to open, but will it have books?

'I am totally opposed to closing any branch libraries,' said Fiala, whose district includes the new library. 'The most important thing about branch libraries is that they serve the local communities.' 'Still', Fiala said 'commissioners would look at all the viable options and try to do right by the residents. The County Commission has been very solidly behind keeping our public facilities open.' Fiala said. 'That's what serves the taxpayers.'

NDN: Fiala suggests charity work

Brent Batten writes:

Tuesday, Fiala signaled a willingness to at least listen to the case that the county should resume funding deserving nonprofit agencies.

But she wants proof that the community stands behind the idea. And for that, the nonprofits would have to put forth some effort.

Fiala said the bigger nonprofits, those with large volunteer corps, should consider launching a petition drive aimed at getting a specific tax to benefit local charities on the ballot.

“It’s been an ongoing discussion for years. If they (charities) are really interested in doing that, let’s give them the chance," she said.

Commissioner Donna Fiala Opens Campaign 2008

By Carol Glassman

Tuesday, March 4 was a busy political day across the United States. While some in Florida were occupied with the results from the Democratic and Republican primaries in Texas, Rhode Island, and Ohio, Here in Southwest Florida, Collier County’s District 1 to be exact, voters gathered to meet, greet, and hear their Commissioner Donna Fiala enthusiastically begin her campaign for re-election. Although there is no challenger to date to the position she has held since 2000, Fiala stated that she did not want to receive any “last minute surprises" and that no one should ever be overly confident enough NOT to campaign.

Addressing almost everyone in the crowd by name, Fiala assured them she had not completed some tasks she had begun since she first took office, and that she was not ready to quit until she had.

Commission rejects plea to delay impact fee increases

This is an excerpt from an article in the Naples Daily News:

When the discussion did begin, Fiala seemed inclined to support the delay, but wavered and then came out on the other end when the vote was taken.

"I thought I was going to vote for it when we started, and then I ended up opposing it," Fiala said. "As I heard the facts, I realized it was not the right thing to do."

She decided that delaying impact fee increases wouldn't do much good, and also decided that there was more of a need for existing homes now on the market to sell,

Fiala said. "Hopefully if prices on new homes are too high, people will look at buying existing homes that are already on the market," Fiala said.

Today, Fiala, became the first incumbent elected official in Collier to file for re-election. Her term in office expires at the end of 2008.

"I just feel like my work isn't done yet," Fiala said minutes after dropping her paperwork off at the Collier Supervisor of Elections Office. "I thought long and hard about it, and decided there was more I wanted to accomplish."

Fiala becomes the first incumbent county official whose term expires in 2008 to announce she will run for election.

Her goals if elected to another four-year term include continuing efforts to redevelop East Naples. Fiala has long pushed to redevelop the area to bring in more high-end homes and businesses.

"We're finally getting some good restaurants into East Naples," she said.

Her accomplishments while in office include working to fix the problems with the Naples landfill, improvements to water and wastewater plants and pushing for the construction of more roads and the widening of existing roads.

Fiala said she also is looking out for Marco Island. Many island residents weren't thrilled when she first ran for commissioner because she lives in East Naples and the last few commissioners in her district were Marco residents.

"I think we've grown a beautiful relationship with Marco over the years," Fiala said. "It wasn't like that at first, but they know I'm looking out for them."

She has tried to have a good relationship with the entire county, Fiala said.

"It doesn't matter whether you live in my district or not," she said. "My door is open to everybody."
