Around Town: Be Prepared!

It’s wonderful to see the rain start so early, and in such good quantity. As far as I can remember, we haven’t seen rain like this, at this time of year, in a number of years. Things are already beginning to green up.

The president of East Naples Civic Association, Tom Cannon, said it all! His motto is Shop in East Naples – support your local businesses! This is a tough time of year for all retail businesses, especially in these tight economic times. The ENCA wants to encourage all the residents to stay right here, shop right here. Our restaurants are small but wonderful; our businesses are mostly mom & pop with a few larger ones thrown in for good measure. Let’s help them survive the summer and shop here at home.

Around Town: Good Citizens Giving Back To Their Community

I was privileged to be invited to attend the Annual Southwest Florida Golf Charities Gifting Event for 2008. It was hosted again by Irv Sherwood and Mike Ward of Erin’s Isle. The underlying theme was “It’s nice to do nice things for nice people". The event was spectacular, and these guys poured their heart and soul into the planning.

Around Town: Volunteer and Visit!

The County would love to have our community get involved with some of the volunteer committees that help our government to function.  Here are some of the vacancies that need to be filled:

Around Town: Making sure that every vote counts

This week, I would like to write about something that is very important to me – making sure every vote counts.

More and more people are choosing to vote by absentee ballots each year. Many just like to vote from home rather than wait in line or find a parking space, many go back up North but vote here and some cannot leave their home easily, among other reasons.

Ellie Tegelman is my source for restaurants, new and old, so when she said she and Richard just love the new restaurant – Gemi’s – at 2800 Davis Blvd., phone 354-4364, I thought I’d better check it out.  Excuse me if I gush, but this place is absolutely wonderful!  Breakfast is breakfast…except at Gemi’s.  There, it is a delight!

Around Town: What’s up and down in East Naples?

Quite a few people have asked how the current downturn in construction, and resulting reduction in impact fees, will affect the median landscaping in Collier County. At this point, the county has been landscaping the medians upon completion, but due to the current economy and the passing of Amendment 1, commissioners had to find ways to reduce spending.

ENCA Newsletter

Usually I’m bubbling with news of good things happening or about to happen. With the downturn in our economy, the unfunded mandates coming from Tallahassee, the reduction of impact fees and revenues collected, there isn’t a lot of bright, happy news. The county workforce has been greatly reduced. We have cut back in hours of operation and programs at our libraries and parks, and I’m really concerned about what will happen when Amendment One kicks in.

Around Town in East Naples

The Elk’s Lodge on Radio Rd. has the best hot dogs in town, and they only cost $2.00!  I love to go to Hot Dog Saturday.  This week, while there, Al told me that a SweetBay Grocery Store will be opening this coming Saturday, March 8th in the old Winn Dixie building on Radio Rd. and Santa Barbara.  I went over to check it out, and the manager told me there would be prizes, specials, food, music, and lots of fun and activity.  I’m going over to check it out.  Hope to see you there.

You are the first to know that I have a Town Hall Meeting scheduled for March 6th at 7PM in the Edison College Auditorium on Lely Cultural Blvd.  While driving to the meeting, make sure you take a good look at the new South Regional Library being constructed with impact fees, and the Emergency Operations Center located behind it, mainly using grant dollars, impact fees and other funding sources.

We all love the beauty of nature, which is why we voted to tax ourselves for 10 years to purchase land that will stay in conservation forever.  Conservation Collier, the name given to the group assigned the task of recommending what lands should be bought, has been busy assigning a designation of importance to each parcel offered by a willing seller.  One of those parcels is the 2,500-acre Pepper Ranch adjoining the CREW land (Corkscrew Regional Ecosystem Watershed) located in the Immokalee area, and includes a section of Lake Trafford.
