You are the first to know that I have a Town Hall Meeting scheduled for March 6th at 7PM in the Edison College Auditorium on Lely Cultural Blvd. While driving to the meeting, make sure you take a good look at the new South Regional Library being constructed with impact fees, and the Emergency Operations Center located behind it, mainly using grant dollars, impact fees and other funding sources.
Many staff members will be present, along with three other commissioners. The topics being presented will be an update on the county transportation system, parks, the new library, staffing issues, a report from the Sheriff’s Office and Code Enforcement, and a heavy focus on our water and waste water system. Also, the East Naples Civic Association will present an exciting program they are diligently working on. You won’t want to miss this very informative evening.
*Barbara Buehler, from the Friends of Collier, asked me to mention their upcoming event “It’s Magic" Fashion Show, taking place THIS SATURDAY, February 23rd at 11:30 am at the Royal Palm Country Club, 405 Forest Hills Blvd., located in the Lely Country Club Community. The public is encouraged to attend. To purchase tickets, please call 354-6000, ext. 6749. If no answer, please leave your name and phone number. The event will feature Magician Keith Raygor, a very entertaining gentleman who appears regularly at the Watermark Grill.
*This week a friend of mine from Naples Botanical Garden, Sally Richardson, suggested we have lunch at Saporitos Italian Restaurant, 3367 Bayshore Dr. It’s not easy to see from the road, but it is in the old Amador Restaurant building, located one block south of The Real Macaw. I tell you, I haven’t had such a scrumptious, heavenly, tasty, delicate lunch like this in a very long time. Sally Sitta and I ordered Veal Scaloppini Saporitos, a very delicate cut of veal with a marvelous porcini mushroom cream sauce for $16. The menu offered chicken marsala or piccata or caprese; veal scaloppini parmagiana or saporitos or Francese. The seafood items were black pepper crusted salmon in a mustard cream sauce, which Sally Richardson ordered, and garlic and oil sautéed shrimps and mushrooms. The other side of the menu offers Mexican food, which I am sure, is just as delectable. They are open for lunch and dinner, and accept all credit cards. They seat 45 people, so if you plan to dine at this special restaurant, you may want to call 774-6462 for reservations. The owner/chef, German, was trained under Wolfgang Puck. You will be so pleased you tried this hidden-away gem!
* I ran across Susan Geary and Dianne Grover at the Sugden Theater recently. We were all there to see one of the funniest plays entitled The Perfect Wedding. If you haven’t already seen it, please do. It’s too cute for words.
* Lastly, many people have been asking me about the “dead" trees along U.S.41, so I called Diane Flagg, the Director of Alternative Transportation Modes, to investigate. She advises that these trees are very much alive but deciduous. The Crape Myrtle has a very attractive bark and will bloom profusely in the summer months. They grow to a height of 25-30 feet and spread 15 to 25 feet and are planted throughout Collier County. The Bald Cypress trees, planted along the drainage swale, grow naturally in swamps and flood plains. They thrive in normal, and even dry soils. It is a nice shade tree in the summer and loses all its foliage in the winter. The Bald Cypress trees planted along the swale on U.S.41 E, when established, will add to the native plant material and provide a natural appearance along the canal bank. South Florida Water Management encourages native plantings along swales.
